Underneath the surface of the Earth, we have magma flowing within the mantel. In areas where geography lines up, it burst forth and flows outside the confinement of the crust, usually in what we call an eruption. At this point we call it lava, and once it’s cooled the rock can be morphed into lovely beads. Due to the quick cooling of flowing rock, the stones develop porous openings and caves that we utilize for essential oils.

Oils within the beads can release their scent for about a week, however individual wear will greatly impact how long your rocking your favorite smell. Patience is a virtue when it comes to getting these beads ready to wear, place a drop of your oil of choice and wait about an hour for it to soak into the bead. During this time it’s a great chance to curl up with your favorite book and a cup of tea. If your bead is struggling to pick up the oil grab a fresh tooth brush or sponge that has not been used with soap and give the bead a good scrub with warm water and try to soak oil in again. After about an hour, take a moist cloth and wipe off the excess oil.

Choosing your oil is the fun part. Do you want something floral to match the variety of ear rings we offer? Something calming to add to a bracelet for a quick mental reset tucked away for the stressful parts of the day? Regardless, the thickness of the oil will impact how fast it absorbs into your bead, so it may be worth considering. If you are usually in a hurry finding a thinner but quality oil may be worth exploring.

When one oil has run it’s course its wise to clean the bead. Start with a soak in warm water, and scrub with sponge or tooth brush. While some Lava Stone is acid resistant, we still advise avoiding vinegar soaks or strong soaps. Use a mild soap or even shampoo and scrub the bead before a deep rinse. The same pores that soak up the scent are the same pores that hide oil when you are attempting to clean. Rinse thoroughly, and allow the bead to dry.

None of this is to say oils are necessary for enjoying Lava Stones! When researching for this blog we wanted to explore claims that are not tied to smells and extracts. Lava Stone have a negative charge, something that is believed to cleanse the air and attract allergens and pollutants to its porous caves. It is worth noting however, these claims tend to revolve around larger Lava Stone pieces, such as decorative art and landscape offerings.
